Venice and Pisa

Today is Sunday May 30th and because I haven't had Internet access these last few days I have only been able to post pictures from my phone. We spent Thursday all day in Paris again, and took the touristy double decker bus to see all of the sites. We spent an hour at the Louvre and hit the highlights, the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo which was god enough with kids. We got to see Notre Dame Cathedral and went up inside the Arc deTriumphe. We could definitely come back and spend some more days here. We wanted to take a day trip to the Palace of Versailles but they happened to be on strike that day in protest of the government wanting to increase the age of retirement from 60 to 61. So hopefully when we are back in Paris next Saturday that is what we will do.
Friday morning we took an early flight to Venice, Italy. We took a water taxi straight through the canals to our hotel. What a great way to arrive! Venice is an amazing, charming city that seems just like it was hundreds of years ago. There are no cars, bikes, or scooters. You only get around by foot or boat. We had to take the gondola rides through the canals and spent to lazy days walking through shops, seeing the glass blowers make the famous Venetian glass and eaten pizza and Lots of ice cream!!
This morning we got our car and took off on the road to Pisa. It took us about 3 hours and here we are seeing the most famous architectural mistake-the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is in a beautiful square surrounded by a magnificent church with manicured lawns. We had the kids sit for a pencil drawn portrait that turned out pretty neat. We decided to spend the night here instead of heading down to Florence! Which is only an hour a way or so. We will get up tomorrow and head that way. We are at an "American" style hotel tonight with wifi and English kids shows on TV. We had enough of the "old world charm" hotels we were in. Sometimes you need the conveniences of home!!!

Bon Jour Paris!

We landed safely early Wednesday morning-Paris time. We still felt like it was 2am and we had just gotten about 2 hours of our usual 8 hour sleep. But we had to make the most of it and start our day, not to mention that we couldn't check into our hotel until 1pm anyway, so there were no beds in site. Our hotel is right in the heart of the city and just a 5 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. I have to say that the hour drive in bumper to bumper traffic from the airport was not impressing me much about Paris, but when we finally saw the Arc de Triumphe and the famed Champs-Elysees avenue, my opinion started to change. There are gardens and flowers pouring out of every window box and rooftop for blocks. the buildings are all fantastically ornate with intricate wrought iron balconies. I think I want to move her someday!! We made our way to the Tower and took the long, and scary, ride to the top. It's an incredible view of the city-too bad it is an overcast day here today or I might have gotten much better pictures. Well now we are checked in at our hotel (after opting not to eat lunch-to quote Doug "there isn't a single thing on this menu I would eat") and everyone is sleeping soundly and it's only 3:30 in the afternoon. We could be in trouble!! I am guessing most sites are closed when midnight rolls around and we are ready to go!

Tomorrow's the last day of school and first day of vacation!

Summer is finally here! We are packing our bags and picking up the kids after school tomorrow and taking a trip to Paris and Italy. We are flying across the pond and should land in Paris in the early morning. We are kind of winging it and don't have much "planned" but we should hit the highlights, like the Eiffel Tower. I can't wait to see it lit up at night. I will try to keep up my blog with pictures, etc. in case anyone is interested.
